Perched at the foot of Boztepe Mountain overlooking Trabzon, the Panagia Theoskepastos Monastery is a remarkable relic of the Empire of Trebizond. Founded during the reign of Alexios III (1349–1390), this former female monastery features a distinctive two-terraced layout enclosed by protective walls. Its rock-cut church contains rare 14th-century frescoes, including portraits of Emperor Alexios III, his wife Theodora, and mother Irene – offering a vivid glimpse into Byzantine imperial iconography.
Today, visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins of the chapel, cells, and defensive structures that were extensively renovated in the 19th century. The site's hilltop position provides panoramic views of the Black Sea coast. Wear sturdy shoes for the uneven terrain, and visit in morning light to best appreciate the frescoes' details. Nearby Kızlar Monastery (its Turkish name) continues as an active religious site, creating an intriguing blend of history and contemporary spirituality.
