Thales, the famous philosopher and mathematician, was born in Miletus. Archaeologists still excavate here searching for ancient artifacts. Ibramaki Art Gallery was built in the late 19th century with funds from the prominent local figure Zeki Efendi. Restored in 2009, it looks almost new. The two-storey stone building is a fine example of public Ottoman-era architecture. The entrance is on the second floor, reached by two staircases with a small fountain between them. The gallery hosts painting, ceramics and photography exhibitions, concerts and meetings with writers.
