Accor · Rixos

An imposing five-star hotel in the heart of Almaty, Rixos Almaty welcomes guests with a spectacular multi-story atrium and a premium 2,200-square-meter spa. While it remains a premier venue for high-level conferences and business meetings, the aging room interiors and inconsistent service quality often fall short of the luxury price tag.

Detailed description

Rixos Almaty makes an impression of a majestic palace thanks to its huge glass atrium and monumental architecture, yet the actual guest experience often contrasts with that ceremonial facade. Guests appreciate the hotel for its excellent central location, magnificent Anjana spa center, and regally varied breakfasts with sparkling wine. At the same time, the guest rooms urgently require refurbishment, and service swings sharply from genuine care to indifference. The high cost of staying makes guests particularly sensitive to any flaws in the furnishings and service.

Key Observations

Contrast between lobby and rooms: The first impression of the magnificent atrium with abundant greenery and live music gives way to disappointment upon entering the guest-room area, where signs of years of wear are visible.

Uneven service: Reviews are full of both warm thanks to individual staff members and complaints about slow response, difficulty getting through to reception, and booking mix-ups.

Outstanding spa complex: The 2,200 m² spa center with a large pool, Finnish sauna, and hammam consistently earns high marks from both guests and outside visitors.

Trajectory: The issue of worn carpeting and plumbing remains unresolved throughout 2024–2026; piecemeal improvements and replacement of individual details do not compensate for the absence of a full renovation of the rooms.

Main Pros

  • Excellent location in the very center of Almaty within walking distance of key parks, theaters, and restaurants.
  • Lavish buffet breakfast with a huge selection of dishes, fresh pastries, and champagne.
  • Spacious spa center with a large warm pool and a high-quality gym.
  • Large rooms with high ceilings and beautiful views of snow-capped mountains from upper floors.
  • Professional staff members who are ready to help in difficult situations (guests often thank Zharas, Meruert, and Zhasmin at reception).

Main Cons

  • Pronounced wear and tear in the room stock: old furniture with chips, leaking plumbing, and persistent stains on the carpet.
  • Poor climate-control adjustment, which can leave rooms very cold in winter.
  • Cleanliness and housekeeping issues, including dust on shelves and infrequent replacement of bath amenities.
  • Slow staff response to everyday requests (delivery of bathrobes or an iron can take hours and require multiple requests).
  • High room rates that do not match the actual comfort level in the rooms.

Description: Rixos Almaty offers guests a luxury urban retreat concept with an emphasis on wellness and executive services. The building's main architectural feature is a giant indoor atrium with glass elevators, a winter garden, and lounge areas, where it is pleasant to hold business meetings to the sound of a piano. The room rate usually includes access to the grand Anjana spa complex and breakfast.

Target Audience: The hotel is ideally suited to participants in large business conferences, forums, and business travelers who value the prestige of the venue. It will also appeal to spa lovers and tourists willing to put up with tired interiors for the sake of an excellent location and royal breakfasts.

Location & Transport

Location: The hotel occupies an advantageous position in the very heart of Almaty. It is a classic city hotel surrounded by developed infrastructure: grocery stores, currency exchange offices, small parks for strolling, and cozy coffee shops are nearby.

Key Points of Interest: The Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theater named after Abai and the cozy Nedelka Park are a 15-minute walk away. St. Nicholas Cathedral is 1.2 km away, and Ascension Cathedral (Zenkov) is 1.5 km away. Most of the city's main attractions can be reached by taxi in 10–15 minutes.

Transport: Taxis are always on standby near the hotel, and public transport is available on adjacent streets. The hotel provides airport transfer services (for an additional fee, about 10,000 ₸ per car one way).

Walkability: The surrounding streets are well suited for walking, the sidewalks are wide, and the square behind the hotel offers pleasant shade on summer days.

Grade: A

Rooms & Cleanliness

The main weak point of the hotel remains the condition of the rooms. Despite the impressive size of the rooms and comfortable orthopedic mattresses, the interiors look dated: dark stains are often visible on the carpet, the furniture is worn, and the plumbing malfunctions (guests complain about weak hot-water pressure or the absence of shower doors, which leads to flooding on the floor). In winter, rooms can be chilly due to drafts from windows and inefficient heating. Housekeeping periodically draws criticism — guests note dust in corners, unemptied trash, and delays with towel changes.

Grade: C-

Service

Service quality at the hotel is extremely inconsistent. On the one hand, responsive managers work at reception (Zharas, Meruert, Zhasmin, Aida), who quickly resolve check-in and baggage issues, while massage therapist Oleg in the spa area and hairdresser Tatiana receive rave reviews. On the other hand, night reception shifts and room service often fail to cope with the load: guests wait hours for delivery of bathrobes or an iron. There are cases of lack of coordination between departments, when information about prepayment or deposits gets lost during handoffs.

Grade: B-

Dining

The buffet breakfasts are the pride of Rixos Almaty. Guests describe them as magnificent: the tables always have red fish, cold cuts, fresh vegetables, fruits, exquisite desserts, and champagne. On request, the chefs prepare omelets and fried eggs. On the downside: the restaurant hall can be very cold because of the powerful air conditioning, and some guests consider the coffee quality average. Orders in the lobby bar sometimes take too long, and hot dishes may arrive lukewarm.

Grade: A-

Facilities & Amenities

The hotel's facilities are excellently developed. The 2,200 m² Anjana spa center offers a large indoor pool with warm water, a jacuzzi, a hammam, and a Finnish sauna (although some guests point out the need for more thorough cleaning in the hammam). The gym is better equipped than in most five-star hotels in the city and operates around the clock. The business center and conference halls are ideally suited for large-scale events of up to 1,000 people.

Grade: A-

Important Notes

  • Room rates are very high and often do not justify the condition of the rooms.
  • At check-in, the hotel requires a minibar deposit (about 100 $), without which the refrigerator remains locked.
  • Bloggers and influencers are often present in the lobby shooting videos, which can disturb the atmosphere of privacy and calm.

Practical Tips for Guests

  • When booking, try to choose rooms on upper floors (starting from the 7th floor) to guarantee a beautiful mountain view and avoid street noise. The 7th floor also has interesting two-level rooms (duplexes) with the bedroom on the 8th floor.
  • Check the plumbing and availability of bathrobes immediately upon check-in. If there are problems, contact manager Zharas or Meruert without delay — they help guests most promptly.
  • Bring a light sweater or cardigan to breakfast, as the air conditioning in the dining room runs at full power.
  • If you plan an early check-in, agree on its cost in advance in writing to avoid misunderstandings at the front desk.

Final Verdict

Rixos Almaty offers excellent facilities, magnificent breakfasts, and a wonderful spa in the very center of the city, but the tired room stock and inconsistent service prevent it from fully matching its declared five-star category.
