Antioch on the Maeander

Antioch on the Maeander

Ancient Carian city with Byzantine ruins and Roman stadium remnants, near modern Aydın Province.

Antioch on the Maeander, once a thriving ancient Carian city, offers visitors a glimpse into its layered history through scattered ruins. Founded as Pythopolis and later renamed by Antiochus I, the city played strategic roles in Byzantine and Seljuk conflicts. Today, remnants include a well-preserved Roman stadium stretching 200 meters and Byzantine fortifications sprawling across 60-70 hectares. Though unexcavated, the hilltop site (locally called Yenişer) overlooks the confluence of the Maeander and Orsinus rivers, providing picturesque views.

History buffs will appreciate its Crusade-era significance, including the 1148 Battle of the Meander. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven terrain, and visit nearby Başaran village for local insights. The Venus de Milo's sculptor may have hailed from here, adding artistic intrigue.
